29 Apr The Best Father Figure Ever….
With conviction in his voice and a wisdom cultivated by his Papa, Cameron knew exactly how many layers of his 18 year old self were buttoned up by his grandfather, his Papa. The first 10 years of his life were void of a father figure in the traditional sense. He knew his Mom was stretched thin trying to provide for her family on her own. Papa stepped in modelling humility and chivalry. Papa Fred taught his grandson what it looked like to be a kind provider. A gentle protector. A calm leader.
As Papa’s health started to decline, graced occurred. Cameron fastened on his Papa’s altruistic tool belt, paying each ounce of selfless nurturance back into the soul from which it once came.
As a Celebrant, I’ve never been more compelled to urge a family member to speak at a service. Cameron is an intellect, he’d nail a eulogy. Yet, his words on paper felt too glossy. Just way too unremarkable in comparison to his Papa’s legacy. Maybe he just couldn’t/shouldn’t try to memorialize this great man? That’s where he was the morning of the service.
Minutes into the service, Cameron glanced over to me with a look that told me Papa also gave him courage. In that moment, Cameron got out of his own way and let the words to genuinely honour his Papa, his hero, effortlessly roll out.
Cameron charted his own healing course. He also proved Papa will always be there through the eyes of a young man.
