01 Oct A Great Man
Yes, he was. Ken left behind a wide swath of friends, family and literal life fans when he succumbed to pancreatic cancer in the early morning hours of a Tuesday in May. His wife Pat knew she had some shakey steps ahead of her to begin a life that did not include her best friend, in house comedian, friend to all felines, fashion aficionado with an aversion to socks and total Nascar nut. A death had occurred and together we bypassed the dark cloak of a traditional funeral and laid the groundwork for a celebration of a man ~ this great man ~ who had a story that I ever-so-gratefully was able to share. One that laid the foundation for the crucial stages of grief and mourning.
On May 25th, loved ones gathered to honour this eclectic soul who lived his life constantly replenishing his bucket list. Ken left a legacy of loyalty, love and a larger than life capacity for understand and graciousness. It was hard to lose someone that seemed to magnetize happiness wherever he went. Not contrived schmooziness….but, this was a good hearted gentleman with a zest for adventure! He was the stranger who became your friend within minutes and the fella that a few beers around a campfire were so monumental they became etched in your “precious moments” memory banks. With his deep brown puppy dog eyes, his naturally occurring “DJ” voice and his never-say-no to shenanigans personality, Ken left a handprint on countless hearts.
He embodied the words of Steve Pavlina, “Don’t die without facing the daring adventure that life was meant to be.”
Friends and family gathered in such an exquisite manner the energy created a cocoon of shared support. There were ears for stories and shoulders for tears. In our moment of tribute, we felt Ken. As Rumi says, “Goodbyes are only for those that love with their eyes. Because for those that love with heart and soul, there is no such thing as separation.”
Ken is a man who made a difference in the world. We all do. And when our time here on earth is finally over ~ our story deserves to be told.
