It’s Time To Bury The Term “Funeral”

It’s Time To Bury The Term “Funeral”

The word makes you shudder.  The thought makes you cringe.  It’s a Pavlovian response of pain when anyone comes in contact with the word funeral.  Thank you for your service dear word but you are now dismissed…..

Death is apart of life, just as birth is.  It’s the grand finale of rich lessons, contribution, spectacular love and epic fails.  After a great meal we have dessert.  Why are we not treating life the same way?  Losing someone is a solid blow to the heart, for sure it is….but ignoring the loss or fumbling through an archaic ritual of generic ramblings shrouded in hues of grey and black only serves to paralyze us in a vacuum of despair. People are spit back into the real world, the living world, totally off balance as everything, yet nothing, happened when their loved one died.

Every life is singularly unique, as is the loss when it occurs.  The last chapter of ones life is the climax to be masterfully delivered with exquisite attention to the details of each page of a life story as it was lived. All of the senses must be captivated just any story rivets its audience.

Let’s talk about favourite places because this is where these final pages will be written.  This is where we will celebrate life and begin to heal.  By the water where the spray of the waves tickles your toes, at a winery where so many celebrations were already held, next to that favourite tractor in the barn with a view of the horses grazing or maybe the 19th hole of the golf course, perhaps the neighbourhood pub or right there on the pitcher’s mound.  Can you feel the shift?  You, your family, your friends and your newest Angel, all together, as we experience these last precious pages of a life-lived love story.  Yours to have.  Yours to keep.  Yours to move forward with ~ never to “move on without”…..

Death is inevitable ~ how we respond to it is optional.  These final pages, whether written at the time of passing or as a tribute to a life, are how we keep our loved ones alive within us and borne into the generations to come.
