Never Miss A Chance

Never Miss A Chance

Her twins, Danielle and Daniel, were born to Mom Daniella when Daniella she was 16.  Everyone always laughed at their names but Mom said she chose them to keep them close. It worked.  Daniella went from honour roll and varsity team captain to a young girl with two kids shunned by judgement at every turn.  The photos of her the year her babies were born reveal a beauty that was beyond stunning.  She was judged for that too.  With so many obstacles infront of her, her family urged first, then demanded second, that she put her babies up for adoption.  The father had already vanished into thin air.

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new. A mother is fierce.

Next came hairdressing school made possible by other teenage friends willing to babysit.  From there she opened up shop and became a true artist of her craft. Her kids thrived yet were aware of Mom’s life of sacrifice.  Danielle was always asked who her older sister was and Daniel was teased about his “hot Mom”.  And yet, Mom was just that, she was just Mom.  She put her children through University without either one of them owing even a dime of debt.  She made Holidays magical and bad times better times.   She did it with grace, humility and poise.  Most of all, she did it alone.  No one knew why.  There were plenty of suitors begging for a chance but she just couldn’t.  Her words were that both sides of her heart were already taken.  Many realize that she had no idea how to be taken care of and was afraid to try.

On a chilly Saturday Daniella called her son to apologize that she would be about an hour late to pick up her grandchildren as promised. She just wasn’t feeling great. Daniel gave it 15 minutes, called Daniella, then went to Mom’s.  “She’s just 52, eats well, exercises all the time and looks like a million bucks” but the worry consumed them.  Instincts, they are never wrong.  Even when you so want them to be.  Doctors say her heart of gold ceased suddenly, likely minutes after she hung up the phone. Their last words were, as always, “I love you.”
